The Leelanau Conservancy has been recognized as one of only three land trusts in Michigan and 37 in the nation that has earned national accreditation.
The Land Trust Accreditation Commission, which is an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance (LTA), announced that the Conservancy received the recognition in the first round of accreditation.
“The accreditation seal lets the public know that the accredited land trust has undergone an extensive, external review of the governance and management of its organization and the systems and policies it uses to protect land,” said the commission’s executive director, Tammara Van Ryn.
Conservancy executive director Brian Price hailed the announcement, saying it “demonstrates our commitment to permanent land conservation” and that “we are a stronger organization today having gone through the rigorous accreditation program.”
The Conservancy and other land trusts were announced at a ceremony at the LTA’s annual rally in Pittsburgh earlier this month. The rally is called the largest gathering of land conservationists in the country, and the land trusts that were honored can now display a seal indicating they meet national standards for excellence while ensuring that conservation efforts are permanent.
The Conservancy, which was founded in 1988, has protected nearly 7,000 acres and 22 miles of shoreline and river/stream frontage in Leelanau County through its work with more than 100 conservation-minded landowners.
Also recognized from Michigan are Washtenaw Land Trust and Chikaming Open Lands Trust in Berrien County.
