Building permit pace still lagging

The number and value of building permits issued so far in 2007 has slipped well below levels seen by this time in 2006.

Over the latest two-week period, the Leelanau County Building Code office issued just five new building permits compared to 22 permits issued during the same period in 2006. That has brought the year-to-date number of permits issued to 40, compared to 65 by the same time last year.

The estimated construction value of the recently issued permits received a huge boost from a single permit issued to the owners of The Homestead resort in Glen Arbor – for a $763,805 addition to a commercial banquet facility. The combined value of the five permits, $842,950, brought the year-to-date estimated total construction value to $2,193,726. That’s nearly 42 percent below estimated values by this time in 2006.

Following is a list of projects for which permits have been issued, listed by the community in which the work is being done:

BINGHAM: Pathways of Suttons Bay, L.L.C. (Interlake Associates L.L.C.), manufactured single-family residence on basement with covered porch and attached garage at 2755 S. Pine Meadow Path, $1; Leelanau Dream, L.L.C. (Ken Mork Construction) alteration to single-family residence at 2344 S. Sandy Beach Dr., $18,720.

ELMWOOD: Russell R. Kirt, final inspection for detached garage at 9981 E. Bluewater Dr., $1,000.

GLEN ARBOR: Bayberry Group Inc., commercial addition to “Gnomes Banquet Facility” at 5035 S. Woodridge Rd., $763,805.

LELAND: Perry and Heidi Pentiuk (Coastal Building Co.), change of use and residential addition at 106 N. Lake St., Unit 1, $59,424.
