The Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) will offer an all-day volunteer training class for people interested in volunteering in the Schoolship program but were unable to attend the 2007 weekly training sessions.
The Schoolship program is a shipboard Great Lakes science and history experience for upper elementary, middle and high school classes. Students engage in hands-on learning as they become “scientists for the day” aboard the 77-foot schooner Inland Seas or the 112-foot schooner Manitou.
Volunteer opportunities also exist in the Inland Seas Education Center in Suttons Bay for those who prefer land-based programs.
The all-day class will take place on Wednesday, April 4, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the education center, located on the waterfront in downtown Suttons Bay on Dame Street. Volunteers will learn how to teach students about aquatic biology, water chemistry and the center’s new wetland project.
ISEA recently held a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and presented awards to many of its volunteers. During 2006, some 240 ISEA volunteers logged 11,056 volunteer hours, according to a news release.
For further information contact Ken Cerny, ISEA’s volunteer coordinator, by phoning 271-3077 or via email at kcerny@schoolship.org.
