"Ladies of the Lights," a program that will pay tribute to the women who helped tend to the beacons that protected the shores of Michigan, will be held Monday at the Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City.
The one-hour program, which will benefit the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum near Northport, will begin at 7 p.m. and cost $10 per person.
Dianna Stampfler, the president of Promote Michigan and active in Michigan Lighthouse Project and Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association, will lead the program. She will share stories of the women who were lighthouse keepers in what was often a dangerous profession. Also included will be readings from journals, logs and autobiographies from the keepers. In all, nearly 20 women have been identified who excelled in the profession, and nearly 50 images have been collected of keepers, their lights and families.
The Maritime Academy is located on 715 E. Front St. in Traverse City. For more information, call 386-7195.
