The Shielding Tree Nature Center, which last year relocated from its Leelanau County location at the Lawr Farmstead within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore to Traverse City, is looking for board members.
Current board president Jill Yaple, a Maple City resident, said that while Shielding Tree’s office has relocated to 1820 Oak Hollow Dr. in Traverse City, Leelanau County remains at the heart of the organization.
“Currently we have many volunteers and board members who are Leelanau County residents. We would like to extend an invitation to the entire community to get involved by becoming a board member,” she said. Other county residents who are current board members include Penny Concannon and Bob Elliott, both of Lake Leelanau.
Shielding Tree, which works to help build awareness and appreciation of the environment, is now sharing office space with The Girl Scouts of Crooked Tree.
Shielding Tree offers programs through the Girl Scouts’ Camp Sakakawea near Grawn. The center also offers ecological education programs to regional schools, and the Leelanau Earth Education Program (LEEP), an after-school and summer program for elementary age students.
On Saturday, May 26, Shielding Tree is inviting the community to its Spring Celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For information about the event or about joining the board, call 922-0818 or visit www.shieldingtree.org.
