A trespass charge filed last week by the county Prosecutor's office could have long-term implications on hunting and fishing rights claimed by Native Americans. The Prosecutor’s office has filed criminal charges against a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians that could turn into a “test case” over inland hunting and fishing rights that the Tribe asserts were granted in an 1836 treaty.

A policy addressing when — and if — naturally occurring wildfires should be extinguished is being written by Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore officials. The current policy is to put out fires as soon as they are discovered.

The four county school districts have filed a “cross-claim” against the state, asking that it be held responsible for any financial awards that might result from a pending lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the state’s Proposal A school financing system.

At its monthly meeting last Wednesday night, the Township Planning Commission halted its review of the proposed trail project that began in December. The situation turned more complex last month when the township received “dual” land-use applications for the project from the Leelanau Trails Association, and grew more complicated as the township suspended its review of the project.

A “fee demonstration” program that begins next week at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore park generated much of the discussion at Friday’s meeting of the park’s Citizens Advisory Commission.

Friday was the first full day of spring, but by night began a four day snowstorm that left an estimated seven inches of snow.

The Steve Garvin residence in Cedar burned to the ground Saturday evening while the family was away.

The Coast Guard Friday opened South Manitou Shoals crib for the navigation season with Henry E. Brunet BM 1, formerly of Empire, in charge. Brunet’s last duty station was at Frankfort.

March 23, 1977

A “victory caravan” that was eight miles long followed Glen Lake back from its state final victory over Detroit East Catholic, 70-68, in Ann Arbor to become the Class D basketball champions. The underdog Lakers connected on 27 of 55 field goal attempts.

Mountains of ice were piled up along the shore of Grand Traverse Bay by howling winds. The ice, mounted to 25 feet high, snapped trees and power lines.

In the classifieds: Leelanau County, 90 acre farm large house in excellent condition, barn, garage, rolling hills with panoramic views of Lake Leelanau, one-half mile of road frontage. $89,000, land contract terms.

We are informed that Joseph Nedow has purchased John Miller’s interest in the steamer Tiger.

Wm. Nedow, who has been at Maple City for the past few weeks under Dr. Fralick’s care, returned home last week much improved.

We are informed that Mr. S.E. Blackwood will be retained another month in our schools.

Marine men are predicting an early opening of navigation. From the present prospect we think that boats will not be able to get out before the first of June.
