Mary Pauline Stier

A funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City for former Leelanau County resident Mary Pauline Stier who died March 20 at Munson Medical Center. She was 89.She was born July 21, 1917. In 1947, in Lake Leelanau, she married William R. Stier who preceded her in death.

She spent her early days living near Chicago and in South Bend, Ind. A graduate of Eastern Michigan University, she worked as an educator in Lansing, Leland and Traverse City. In addition to raising a family, she and her husband both pursued teaching careers and operated a motel in Leland. She was a long-time member of St. Francis Parish and the Senior Center where she enjoyed playing cards.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Kay (Scott) Hicks, and five grandchildren, all of Traverse City.

She was also preceded in death by a son, John R. Stier of Traverse City; and brothers, Charles and William Wall.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Carmelite Monastery or to St. Francis Catholic Church.
