A dozen Centerville Township residents joined the township supervisor, clerk and treasurer at an Annual Meeting at the township hall on Saturday morning.
Township residents voted to increase pay for the three elected officials although confusion about requirements for paying the treasurer resulted in a second vote clarifying a pay increase for Katrina Pleva.
A pay increase for Pleva, the treasurer, will reflect only her “base salary” rather than additional per-parcel pay for summer and winter tax collections. A salary resolution originally adopted by the township board separated the two payments and called for a $1,000 increase in base salary.
With the elimination of additional per-parcel pay, however, the treasurer would not actually have received a pay increase. After further discussion, township resident voted a second time on a pay increase for the treasurer, raising her “base salary” to $10,850 from the originally proposed $10,350.
The supervisor and clerk both received $500 annual pay raises. Supervisor Leonard Kelenski will earn $8,000 in fiscal 2007-08; and clerk James Balesh will earn $10,000.
Earlier in the meeting, township residents learned about a contract with assessor Julie Krombeen to perform tax assessment duties for Centerville Township. The contract was for $9 per parcel on 1,315 parcels for a total cost of $11,835 plus expenses.
Also discussed was Centerville Township’s $48,500 contribution to support the Solon-Centerville Fire and Rescue Department. Township officials noted that an extra-voted millage is not yet required to support the department, but that the township’s road improvement fund has been depleted as a result of the fire/rescue expenditure.
Township officials also presented an update about planned improvements at the township hall as well as the availability of 9-1-1 address signs. Residents and officials also heard a briefing from District No. 5 county commissioner David “Chauncey” Shiflett about activities of the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners.
Kelenski briefly outlined a budget for the fiscal year beginning April 1 based on revenues of $158,900 and expenditures of $176,650. The township had some $213,836 in its general fund balance as of March 31.
Convened at 10 a.m. on March 31, the Centerville Township Annual Meeting adjourned at 11:51.
