Offender ordered to buy fire hydrant

How much does a fire hydrant cost? In Glen Arbor Township, a little over $3,500. At least, that’s what a Suttons Bay man found out in 86th District Court this week.

Jeffrey K. Pasche, 46, of 685 S. Stony Point Rd., Suttons Bay, was sentenced for driving while intoxicated. In addition to paying $870 in fine and costs, Pasche will also have to pay $3,504 to replace a fire hydrant located along County Road 675 in Glen Arbor Township after he ran into it on Jan. 21.

Pasche was ordered to serve two days in jail with credit for two days served. He was also sentenced to perform three days of community service work in lieu of three days in jail; not to consume or be in possession of alcohol and illegal drugs; not to enter bars; to attend, cooperate with and complete an alcohol highway safety program and impact panel; and to take and pass preliminary breath tests at a probation officer’s discretion. He was also placed on six months’ probation.

According to court documents, Pasche and his family on Jan. 21 had dinner at a Glen Arbor restaurant. After leaving, Pasche apparently ran into the fire hydrant and was subsequently arrested for driving while intoxicated. He was originally charged with two counts of driving while intoxicated with occupants in the vehicle under 16 years old, but the charges were dropped in exchange for his guilty plea.

Since the incident, Glen Arbor Township Fire and Rescue has asked the county Road Commission to erect a barrier to protect the fire hydrant since it has been damaged in the past.
