Talk of the county

This week: David Diller, director of the Glen Lake Community Library

Town or township of residence: “Empire, Village of. I am a village council member, as of last fall.”

Resident of county since: 1997. “I had lived here previously, but it's been continuously since '97.”

Birth date and place: May 1963, in Adrian.

Marital status (include children): Single.

You live in Leelanau County because: “I guess because I'm very lucky. I always loved this area before I moved up here, and I was fortunate enough to get this job and earn a living here.”

Last good movie you saw was: “Probably Little Miss Sunshine. It's a comedy of sorts, of a struggling family that goes on a road trip to take their youngest daughter to a beauty pageant. It was in the Traverse City Film Festival last year. I actually saw it here from our library film collection.”

Last good book you read was: “The one I just finished is called Nonviolence. It's sort of a historical look at pacifism. The author was Mark Kurlansky.”

If you could trade places with one person for a day, that person would be: “I thought about that one quite a bit, and I came up with the centerfielder for the Tigers, Curtis Granderson. I'm a big fan of the Tigers. To be young and athletic like that roaming centerfield would be pretty exciting.”

Things important to you that you have accomplished so far: “I'm actually very proud of what we've done here with our library. I think we've done a great job of cultivating the library, of making it a very good community resource.”

What you hope to be doing in 10 years: “I'd be quite happy to be living and working right where I'm at. It's been a good fit.”

Things you lose sleep over: “I'm actually a pretty sound sleeper. I'm kind of a night owl, so when I do go to sleep I'm pretty ready. Some times it's hard to just turn the brain off and go to sleep, but generally I don't lose much sleep.”

If you could change one thing in Leelanau County, it would be: “I would like to see our schools get the kind of good financial support they really need. It concerns me that in a community like ours we can't find a better way to provide funding for our schools.”

Favorite dessert is: “This is a little obscure, but it's called Shoo-fly Pie. It's made with molasses, but it's really delicious. I think it comes from the Mennonite tradition.”

Are you a coffee drinker? “Yes. I'm thrilled we have a little coffee roasting place right here in Empire, and that's what I buy almost exclusively. Just black.”

Favorite place in Leelanau County is: “The library is right up there, but I do like to do some things outside of work. It's hard to pick one spot out, but the National Lakeshore itself is very special to me.”

If you had more time, you would: “I'd be thrilled if I had more time. I wish I had more time to travel. It's hard to get away. I'd like to spend more time in the West, in the mountains. The perfect trip for me would be an open ended road trip all over out West.”

The words that best describe you are: “I have heard people say that I'm thoughtful and considerate.”
