A workshop on how to gain tax advantages under the state's new Qualified Forest Property Act will be offered at the Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Station in Bingham Township on Monday evening, April 16.
The 2006 law offers a tax incentive of exemption from the 18-mill non-homestead property tax for private forestland owners of parcels of 20 to 320 acres in size. The workshop will outline eligibility requirements and program benefits as well as information about forest management and conservation programs.
Leading the 7-9 p.m. workshop will be Karen Potter-Witter, a forestry professor from Michigan State University. Also giving remarks will be Daniel Schillinger, District Forester with the Leelanau/Grand Traverse Conservation Districts, and Bran Price, executive director of the Leelanau Conservancy. The workshop is sponsored by the MSU Extension Forest Team, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, local conservation districts, and the Leelanau and Grand Traverse Regional Land conservancy.
Cost to attend is $15 per person, which includes a detailed information packet.
To register, call the Leelanau MSU Extension office in Leland at 256-9888 or send an email to msue45@msu.edu.
