Event to aid 'Old Art' sound system

Members of the Leelanau Community Cultural Center are kicking off a series of fundraising events to help fund the purchase of sound equipment for the Old Art Building in Leland.

The first event, which will be held 7 p.m. Sunday at the Old Art Building, will include a sneak preview of the Old Town Playhouse’s upcoming comedy Hay Fever. The play is being directed by Karen Cross of Northport. Coffee and dessert will follow the hour-long performance.

“Noel Coward is a classic playwright and his scripts are extremely entertaining. People who come to this fundraising event on will get little snippets of the play,” said Judy Livingston, LCCC program director.

Hay Fever opens at the playhouse in Traverse City on Friday, May 4, for a three-week run. Musical interludes include some of Coward’s most famous songs.

“This will be a nice collaborative event with the Old Town Playhouse,” added Livingston, who said many people who have used the Old Art Building facilities over the years have expressed the desire for an improved sound system.

“The board does not want to change any of the character of the interior of the building in order to get a better sound. In other words, we don’t want to hang things in the ceiling that would help prevent the sound from bouncing around the room from the stage,” she said.

Livingston said the group is interested in a small sound system of “under $5,000” to be made available to performers at the Old Art Building.

Tickets for the LCCC fundraiser are $8 and can be purchased during regular business hours at the Old Art Building, or at the door Sunday night. Discounted tickets for Hay Fever will be available at the fundraiser, with some of the proceeds going to the LCCC.
