The resignations of a two longtime teachers were accepted and a 3-year contract for the school business manager approved Monday night by the Suttons Bay Board of Education.
Board members voted 7-0 Monday to accept the resignations of middle school special education teacher Kathleen Weaver and sixth grade teacher William Green, effective at the end of the school year.
Green, the longest-serving teacher currently in the district, will retire in June after 37 years at Suttons Bay. Weaver is also retiring.
Superintendent Michael Murray and board members praised the efforts of both teachers.
“They are two high-quality teachers,” board President Steve Hall said.
“(Green) is unbelievable. To have taught as long as he has and still be as fresh as the day he started …,” trustee Roger Merriman added.
Neither teacher is expected to be replaced because of financial constraints, the superintendent said.
“(Weaver) is retiring not only because it’s time, but because it will give another teacher a chance to continue employment,” Murray said.
In related business during the 65-minute gathering, the board approved a 3-year contract for business manager LeAnn Eustice through the 2009-10 school year.
Murray said the agreement leaves the annual salary negotiable from year to year, adding that it’s likely her compensation will align with adjustments made for other contracted staff members.
“She’s a good business manager. The money she saves us each year more than covers what she’s paid,” Murray said.
Eustice’s current 1-year contract expires June 30. The new contract set her 2007-08 salary at $61,150.
The board also:
• Heard a presentation from Murray on the state Superintendent of Schools’ recent broadcast that supported efforts to consolidate school services without losing school and community identity.
• Postponed action on a slate of policy changes that will address, among other issues, background checks for volunteers in the district.
• Discussed keeping Merriman as the board’s representative to the group that elects officers to the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District’s Board of Education. Formal action tapping Merriman is expected at the board’s May meeting. Hall will likely continue to serve as an alternate.
