AIDS play opens

Four Leelanau County residents are involved in the Old Town Playhouse production of As Is, which takes place during the early history of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s.

As Is opened at the OTP’s Studio Theatre in Traverse City last week and will continue on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through April 21 with 8 p.m. performances. In addition, a 3 p.m. matinee will be performed on Sunday, April 15.

Al Lien of Greilickville is the director, and Kristy VerSnyder of Northport is the producer. Ranve Martinson of Lake Leelanau plays Lily in the play, and Victor Maggio of Suttons Bay plays several roles.

The story revolves around Rich (played by Rob Stow), a caterer/writer who reveals he has AIDS. Reactions to his illness, both good and bad, are seen through the eyes of friends, family and people on the street. The play concludes with Rich in the hospital because he has become so weak from AIDS. A Hospice workers acts as narrator through the show.

All tickets are $10 and available online at oldtownplayhouse.com, or by calling 947-2210. The play includes strong language and adult themes.
