Rangers at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will continue their series of guided Saturday afternoon hikes this month.
• April 14 will feature “Long Lost Log Cabins of the Lakeshore.” A short hike will lead visitors to two well-preserved, well-hidden log cabins from the early days of Leelanau County’s settlement.
• April 21 will feature “Wonderful Waterfowl.” Binoculars are recommended for a hike that will allow excellent viewing and lessons about the Lakeshore’s ducks, geese and swans.
• April 28 will be “Junior Ranger Day.” Special activities are planned all day long for children of all ages to earn their Junior Ranger Badge. Programs will be offered at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Regular “Saturdays at the Lakeshore” guided hikes meet at 1 p.m. at the Visitor Center in Empire. Participants then travel in their own vehicles to a specific location to begin a leisurely hike generally lasting until about 3 p.m.
The hikes are free and reservations are not required. However, participants should have a seven-day or 365-day park vehicle pass, available for $10 and $20, respectively. For more information, call 326-5134 or visit www.nps.gov/slbe online.
