A member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians was found guilty of “hunting in a closed area” in Tribal Court. The Leelanau County Prosecutor plans to proceed with trespassing and poaching charges in the incident.

Dozens of lots in Leland Township’s Beechwood Cemetery have been sold more than once in a year-old mix-up that officials recently discovered while computerizing township cemetery records.

Implementation of a law establishing a “sex offenders registry” has been rife with outdated or incorrect information, and there was also a mix-up over whether information obtained from the list could be shared among members of the public.

The county will get back some $24,000 from Grand Traverse county in 9-1-1 telephone service fees that had been misrouted by Ameritech for two years.

Between $90,000 and $125,000 will be required to remodel the county Jail at Leland, a Traverse City architect estimated this week. A new roof will be constructed on the Jail as soon as possible at a cost of up to $14,000.

Leelanau County’s 11 townships will each receive $2,000 from the county this year for fire and ambulance service.

Leelanau County may take over regulation of Lake Leelanau levels on an emergency basis as discussions continue with private owners over the future of the Leland dam.

The high level of Lake Michigan, which is causing untold damage around the county, has destroyed the public bathing beach at Empire and now threatens the village’s water supply.

An Empire Township committee headed by Village President Warren Aylsworth is circulating petitions for the recall of the chairman of the County Road Commission, stemming from the firing of a foreman at the Maple City garage.

Superintendent John Bacon announced as honor graduates this year at Empire High School Marie Basch, valedictorian, and Kaye Schulz, salutatorian.

Capt. Andrew has informed us that he opened the station Thursday last on North Manitou Island.

We received pleasant calls last week from Supervisor S.C. Garthe, A John, O.C. Ransom and Henry Scott of Northport.

Suttons Bay. E.R. Daily and E.A. Voice of Empire were in town this week. Mr. John Cadham and family and Jacob Rufli and wife attended the wedding of Mrs. Rufli’s brother at Leland. Mrs. W.M Payne is planning to visit friends in Ohio.
