Tentative talks set on fire plan

The Empire Township and Glen Arbor Township fire boards have tentatively scheduled a joint meeting for Wednesday, April 25, at 11 a.m. to discuss combining fire department operations.

Empire Township supervisor William Bolton said though the townships’ fire administrative boards have scheduled the meeting, it may be rescheduled so all members from both boards can be present.

The townships are exploring the option of having joint fire department operations.

The proposal involves having one fire chief and administrative officers to run both townships’ fire departments. Both townships would keep their existing fire stations and equipment.

In other business during its meeting Tuesday night, the Township Board:

• Heard a report from contractor Boone Harriger on converting a storage area in the town hall into an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant bathroom. The board approved a contract with Harriger in February to construct the bathroom and complete it on a time and materials basis. Harriger said drawings are completed, and he will start work in two weeks. “Once I get going on project, I don’t stop until it’s done,” he said.

• Heard a report from Bolton concerning traffic speed on LaCore Road. He said James C. Johnson with the county Road Commission talked with Michigan State Police officials about changing the speed limit on the county road as it enters into the Village of Empire. Currently, LaCore outside the village limits has a speed limit of 55 miles per hour, and is 25 mph within the village. Johnson said the State Police would consider changing the entire stretch of LaCore to 40 mph. The board took no action on the matter.
