“It felt great to finally get outside.”
That was the reaction from Suttons Bay varsity boys’ and girls’ track coach Cody Inglis after the Norse teams finally had to a chance to compete Tuesday at Glen Lake.
“Mentally, more than physically, I think we were extremely anxious to get outside and compete,” he said. “It got a little cold out there toward the end of the meet, but that’s the way it goes in northern Michigan track, right?”
Glen Lake senior Marissa Treece was the top individual, winning three events. Suttons Bay’s girls’ team placed second out of six teams, while the Norse boys took third. Glen Lake’s boys’ and girls’ teams each finished fourth. Manton won the boys’ meet and Benzie Central finished first among the girls’ teams.
“There were some exciting first-place runs for our guys against some bigger schools, which just made my day,” said Glen Lake boys’ coach Pete Edwards. “All of the athletes did a fantastic job out there.”
First-place finishers from Suttons Bay’s girls team included Caleigh Lennerth in 100 meter hurdles (18.3), Alyssa Korson in the 300-meter hurdles (54.0), Jenny Mahla in the high jump (4’6”), and Kelly Kerr in the long jump (14’5”). Suttons Bay’s 1600-meter relay team of Kerr, Alyssa Korson, Lizzy Freed, and Breanna Korson finished second (4:41).
Treece paced the Lakers’ attack by winning the 800 (2:24.6), 1600 (5:08) and 3200 (11:08) runs. Also earning victories for Glen Lake were Victoria Pecak in the 100-meter (14.1), Dani Frost in discus (29’9”), and the 400-meter relay team of Pecak, Abbie Christiansen, Anna Brown and Ashley Leach (56.1). The same quartet added a second-place finish in the 800-meter relay (2:06).
On the boys’ side, Norsemen junior Eric Hernandez was first in the 200-meter dash (24.4) and tied with Glen Lake’s Will Urquhart for second place in the 100-meter dash (11.74). Norseman Kegan Rummel took second in the 300-meter hurdles (46.5).
Glen Lake’s 400-meter relay team of Teddy Butrick, James Kozacek, Wyatt Deering and Colby Thoreson combined for a first-place finish (47.47). Butrick, Deering, Kozacek and Urguhart won the 800-meter relay (1:39.08). Urquhart also won the discus (121’9”) with a toss more than 10 feet farther than any of his competitors.
Other point-getters for the Glen Lake boys included: 3200-meter relay team of John Lee, Ricky Butrick, Joey Czapek, and Eric Otto; 400-meter dash, Wyatt Deering, 4th (58.64); 200-meter dash, Teddy Butrick, 3rd (25.15); 1600-meter relay team of Otto, Ricky Butrick, Pierce Gokey, and Tony Wienke, 4th; Discus, Thoreson, 4th place (110’ 5”); high jump, Richie Robertson; shot put: Urquhart, 4th (36’ 10”) and Michael Kandel, 6th (36’ 6”).
Other top finishers for the Laker girls were: 100-meter hurdles, Frost, 5th (21.4); 100-meter dash, Christiansen, 3rd (14.4) and Brown, 6th (14.6); long jump, Christiansen, 5th (13’ 2”); pole vault, Brown, 3rd (7’); 1600-meter run, Amber Therrien, 5th (6:02); 200-meter dash, Pecak, 3rd (30.1).
Other top finishers for Suttons Bay girls included: 100-meter dash, Sarah Simpkin, 4th (14.5); 1600-meter run, Breanna Korson, 4th (5:59); 300-meter hurdles, Leonard, 3rd (57.5); 800-meter run; Breanna Korson, 5th (2:44); 3200-meter run, Elizabeth Adams, 3rd (14:03) and Cassandra Buffum, 4th (14:06); long jump, Mahla, 3rd (13’ 9”); 800-meter relay, Lennerth, Kerr, Simpkin, Alyssa Korson, 3rd.
Other top finishers for Suttons Bay boys included: 3200-meter relay, Rummel, Drew Palmer, Ben Wynsma, and Brandon Morio, 3rd (9:23); 800-meter relay, Nick Porritt, Ben Darling, Nalen Brockman, and Hernandez, 3rd (1:41); 1600-meter run, Wynsma, 6th (5.08); 400-meter relay team, Porritt, Darling, Collin Guadard and Hernandez, 3rd (48.4); 800-meter run, Morio, 5th (2:20); 200-meter dash, Porritt, 5th (25.5); discus, Rummel, 3rd (111’); high jump, Brockman, 4th (5’ 6”); pole vault, Gaudard, 4th (10’ 6”).
The Lakers will run in three meets during the next week: today, April 19, at the Benzie Invitational (4 p.m.); Saturday at the 21st annual Icebreaker Invitational in Frankfort (10 a.m.); and Wednesday at Kingsley (4:30 p.m.).
Suttons Bay will also take part in three meets during the next week: Friday at the Onekama Invitational (3 p.m.); Monday at Benzie Central (4:30 p.m.); and Wednesday at Mesick (4:30 p.m.).
