L-L sex offender faces new charge

A Lake Leelanau man awaiting sentencing on one criminal sexual conduct charge has been charged with another.

The 40-year-old man was arraigned in 86th District Court Friday before Judge Michael J. Haley on one count of criminal sexual conduct (CSC) second degree.

The suspect’s name is being withheld by the Enterprise to protect the identity of the victim. He is currently lodged in the County Jail and is awaiting sentencing on his 13th Circuit Court conviction for assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct. A preliminary hearing on the current charge is scheduled for tomorrow at 10:15 a.m. in the 86th District Court.

The suspect was also convicted in 1986 cases of malicious destruction of property over $100, and of burglary. Both convictions came in 13th Circuit Court, and he is also being considered on habitual offender charges, third offense.

According to court documents, a family member told her mother that after she learned about the Lake Leelanau man’s conviction on the prior CSC charge, she reported being inappropriately touched by him in 1999 or 2000.

If found guilty of the CSC charge, the man faces a maximum penalty of up to 15 years in prison. If the habitual offender third offense clause is allowed, the maximum penalty could be doubled to up to 30 years.
