Laker girls earn sweep in opener

After two weeks of delay, regular softball play returned to Leelanau County Tuesday night when homestanding Glen Lake won a doubleheader against Suttons Bay, 11-1, 15-0.

The Lakers are 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the Northwest Conference, while the Norsemen under new head coach Jen Kloosterman are 0-4 and 0-2. A doubleheader for Leland at Forest Area Tuesday was canceled due to poor field conditions.

Glen Lake coach Gary Galla said Danielle Noonan and Cori Kahler combined in pitching both games. The duo allowed just 1 hit in Game 1 and 3 hits in the nightcap, with Noonan the winning pitcher in both.

In the first game, Annie Lang and Erika Easter each had 2 hits, and Lauryn Pleva and Noonan both had 2 RBI for the Lakers. In the second game, Kristen Pleva had 2 hits and 4 runs scored; Lauryn Pleva had 2 hits with 2 RBI; Tara Novak had 2 hits; and Noonan, Kahler and Lang each had 2 RBI.

For Suttons Bay, Laureen Schmidt had 2 hits in the second game.

“The field was in good shape. Some parents came in over the weekend and blew the snow off it to get the field drying,” Galla said.

Comet coach Charlie Gann said Leland was scheduled to play at Forest Area Tuesday, but field conditions there were poor. The games were canceled.

“We have lost eight games so far this season and I don’t know if we’re going to get them rescheduled. They were all against non-conference teams. Everyone is losing games,” he said.

The problem intensifies toward the end of the regular season, in late May and early June. Leland has doubleheaders scheduled at Bear Lake and Charlevoix and finishes the season at home against Bellaire.

“Just about every year you can guarantee those last non-conference games get canceled because they have to make up a conference game,” Gann said. “I’m worried about the repercussions.”

St. Mary coach Ed Merica is in the same boat: he has a team with a lot of indoor experience, but hasn’t played an official game. “You learn a lot about your team in that first game,” he said.

So far the Eagles have had to cancel two doubleheaders. The good news for St. Mary is it’s playing at Glen Lake today, starting at 4:30 p.m. “It will be good to get outside and get the girls in a game,” Merica said.

St. Mary will host Traverse City Central on Monday. Leland will play at Suttons Bay today, will travel to Buckley on Monday and will then host Benzie on Wednesday, April 25. Glen Lake will host Manton on Tuesday and will play at Buckley on Wednesday, April 25. Suttons Bay will host Mesick on Tuesday.
