Leelanau Classic is all set - except for the location

The second annual Leelanau Classic baseball and softball tournament is on for Saturday — but where it will be played was still up in the air as of Wednesday morning.

"Our parking lot is 3 feet in slush and mud," said Leland baseball coach Hank Burch. "It may have to be moved to Suttons Bay."

The Comets are still hoping to host the event, which will feature all eight softball and baseball teams from Leelanau schools. But the weather will need to cooperate, said Burch, and it hasn't so far in this snowy baseball season. A spring blizzard wiped out all outside prep sports events scheduled for last week, leaving athletic directors scrambling to update schedules.

"We're not sure where it's going to be at Saturday," confirmed Suttons Bay director Cody Inglis.

Regardless of where the event will be held, times for games have been established. In baseball, Leland and Suttons Bay will tangle at 9:30 a.m., according to Burch. St. Mary and Glen Lake, which hosted the inaugural event, will tangle at 11 a.m. The consolation game will be played at 1:30 p.m., with the title up for grabs starting at 3 p.m.

In softball, Leland and Suttons Bay are scheduled to start at 9 a.m., said Comet softball coach Charlie Gann, followed by St. Mary and Glen Lake at 11:15 a.m. The losing teams will meet at 1:30 p.m.; winners will collide at 3:45 p.m.

Burch is looking forward to the tourney although the Comets will be short-handed as five players are scheduled to attend a Youth in Government conference in Lansing. Three are starters.

"My team's looking all right," said Burch. "We'll be short-handed this weekend. It will give my young kids a chance to get right out there and get their ears wet."
