Anthony Stewart of Suttons Bay delivers a pitch during a baseball game played Tuesday at Glen Lake.
The clutch pitching of Anthony Stewart propelled Suttons Bay to a sweep of Glen Lake on Tuesday in the Northwest Conference baseball opener for both Leelanau County teams.
Stewart came on in relief of winning pitcher Josh Feickert in the sixth and final inning of the first game with the Norsemen clinging to a 8-7 lead. The Lakers had the bases loaded and no one out.
Stewart proceeded to strike out the first two batters, then induced the final out on a fly ball to right field.
"The last out was a little more exciting than we wanted," said Suttons Bay coach Doug Periard. "Our rightfielder stumbled, but then got his footing back and made the catch."
Stewart then went the distance in the nightcap, striking out seven in an 11-2 victory. The Norsemen were aided in the doubleheader by walks. Glen Lake's pitching gave up 10 walks in the first game and 14 in the second.
In the opener, Feickert got the win despite giving up 15 hits. Josh Scarbrough went 4-for-4 for Glen Lake, with four RBI and two doubles. Kyle Klumpp contributed a pair of hits and two RBI. Weston Buchan, KCNovak and Joey Galla had two hits apiece. Suttons Bay had four hits.
In the second game, Chris Marin led Suttons Bay with two hits. Jeremy White had a key pinch hit RBI single and Luke Baumann a double.
Suttons Bay, 2-0 in the league and 2-2 overall, hosts Leland on Thursday and then takes part in the Leland Invitational on Saturday, where it will take on the host Comets again at 9 a.m.
Glen Lake, 0-2 in the Northwest and 0-4 on the season, entertains Lake Leelanau St. Mary's on Thursday.
