Wildfire brings a reminder that burn permits required

The forecast calls for a great weekend for sightseeing.

Area firefighters would prefer a little rain.

"It doesn’t take much when it dries up and the wind blows a little," said John Kenney, chair of the Leland Township Fire Board and general manager of the Glen Arbor Fire Department.

Both departments were called to respond to a wildfire that jeopardized four homes near the intersection of Kirt and French roads last week. One home was evacuated, according to state conservation officer Mike Borkovich.

“There is no doubt in my mind that without the fast response, we would have lost three homes,” said Borkovich of the April 22 fire.

Also called to the scene were departments from Suttons Bay and Cedar. The Department of Natural Resources responded with heavy equipment from its Platte River station.

A ticket was issued to Scott Stoerck, 1435 French Rd., Lake Leelanau, for allowing a set fire to escape, Borkovich said. Also, the DNR billed the homeowner $647 for its services.

Borkovich said everyone involved realized the seriousness of the situation and cooperated.

Kenney cautioned residents that burn permits are required before setting outside fires. They are available online at www.michigan.gov/burnpermit, or by calling the DNR Traverse City office at 922-5328. Residents of Leelanau Township should call 386-5343.

Even though green growth is starting to show in Leelanau’s fields and woods, Kenney said plenty of kindling remains ready to ignite.

“That (spring growth) all helps. But it’s still dry, and a little bit of sun and wind can cause problems,” he said.
