The process which began last August to vacate High Street has been completed by the Northport Village Council.
Trustees voted 6-0 on April 19, with Trustee Steve Wetherbee absent, to vacate High Street between Nagonaba and West Street. Action was taken after council members agreed to consider the issue, which was tabled following an Aug. 17 public hearing.
Final action to vacate the street was postponed until after Parkside of Northport LLC and Munson Healthcare finalized the purchase of the former Leelanau Memorial Health Center. The public right-of-way runs down the middle of the property, which is the future site of a senior adult housing community called Northport Highlands.
The Leelanau Township/Northport Utilities Authority contracts with former LMHC maintenance director Bill Crowgey to operate lagoons that are part of the proposed Northport sewer project.
In other business, the council also:
• Agreed to pay the cost of reprinting the Historical Northport Walking Tour brochures.
• Approved a request from Fred Batt, on behalf of the Northport volleyball team, for permission to sell hotdogs, brats, soda, bottled water and promotional team apparel during the Northport Fourth of July celebration. Proceeds from the sale will be used to send players to volleyball camp.
• Renewed its contract with Barbara Weber that allows the village sign on her property near the south village limits, providing the village performs all maintenance.
• Hired Matt Kehl, Sara Rogers and Evan Morgan as marina dock attendants at a rate of $7.25 per hour; Jason Holland Sophia Mosher at $7.50 per hour; Michelle Paquette, Nicole Nielson, Jackson Pierce, Carly Campbell and Cory Connolly at $8 per hour; James Drummond at $9.50 per hour; Brett Hallett at $10.50 per hour; and Benny Lopez, the marina painter, at $10 per hour.
