Eagles win pair of doubleheaders

The St. Mary softball team continues to improve as the season moves into mid-May.

The Eagles secured doubleheader wins at Mesick on Monday and over Manistee Catholic Central on Wednesday, May 2.

At Mesick, the Eagles won 7-1, 12-1. Pitcher Susan Herman dominated with 8 strikeouts, 1 walk and allowing 3 hits.

Coach Ed Merica said St. Mary took advantage of what the Bulldogs gave them. “We had 5 walks and 6 hits,” he said.

Mary Lingaur singled and doubled for the Eagles. Allison Korson, Sarah Schaub, Bradi Pasch and Melissa Nelson each singled.

In the second game, Herman recorded 5 strikeouts, allowed 1 walk and gave up 2 hits. The Eagles had 16 hits in the game. “We had six runs in the sixth inning,” Merica said.

Herman helped her own cause with a single and a double. Lingaur and Emily Schaub each had 2 singles; Anne Kuznicki had 3 singles and scored 3 runs; and Pasch had a double and a triple with 4 runs batted in. Sarah Schaub had a double and 3 singles.

“Sarah started the day with a .590 batting average. I’m sure its up a bit after these two games,” Merica said.

On Wednesday, the Eagles beat Manistee Catholic 4-2, 7-6. Herman pitched both games, notching 8 strikeouts, walking 1 and allowing 10 hits. Alison Korson, Emily Schaub, Sarah Schaub and Kuznicki each hit a single.

In the nightcap, Ashley Bloughman and her sister Elise each hit out-of-the-park home runs for Manistee Catholic. “That was the first time anyone has hit a ball over the fence since we built that field three years ago,” Merica said. Ashley hit her homer in the first, while Elise clouted her dinger in the seventh inning.

Despite the display of offense by the Sabers, the Eagles won the game on a 2-run single from Kuznicki in the bottom of the seventh. Sarah Schaub had 3 singles and 2 RBI, and Pasch had a double and a triple with 3 RBI.

Leland will host Buckley today and has rescheduled an early season rain out for Friday, May 25 at Buckley. The Comets will play against Gaylord St. Mary on Saturday at noon in the Bellaire Tournament. St. Mary will play at Suttons Bay on Friday, May 11, and at Buckley on Monday. The Eagles will host Buckley on Wednesday, May 23 in a rescheduled doubleheader from earlier this season.
