Suttons Bay’s girls’ soccer team appears to be firing on all cylinders as the Norse approach double-digit wins. And coach Ryan DeFour hopes to keep the momentum going when his team travels to Gaylord today.
The Norse racked up wins seven and eight, and a tie, in winning its own Invitational tournament Saturday. Win No. 9 came Tuesday with a 3-0 victory over a traditionally tough Charlevoix Red Rayder squad.
“Charlevoix was tough, but our girls got up for it and played well,” DeFour said.
After going scoreless in the first half, the Norse went up first 1-0 on a marker by Alyssa Korson.
“Alyssa got a couple of through balls from the midfielders. She kept her composure, finished and finished well,” DeFour said.
Korson added a second goal, assisted by Brandi Albarado. Charlotte Stowe was credited with an assist on the first goal. Kara Bunbury added a third goal for the 3-0 final. Kelsey Wick was in net for the Norse, recording the shutout.
Suttons Bay beat Ludington and Big Rapids Crossroads Academy and tied with Elk Rapids to earn the tourney title.
Junior Erin Sneed had two goals in Suttons Bay’s 2-1 win over Ludington. Korson, Octavia Buss and Madigan Johnson tallied in the Norsemen’s 3-1 win over Crossroads Academy.
In the nightcap, the Norse played to a 2-2 tie with bay area rival Elk Rapids.
“We didn’t play particularly well that game,” DeFour said.
The neck-and-neck battle began with a goal from Korson. The Elks knotted the score at one with a goal of their own. Suttons Bay got another goal and Elk Rapids played to the 2-2 tie, netting its second goal with just minutes remaining. Korson and Albarado were credited with goals.
Suttons Bay will host Harbor Springs at 11 a.m. Saturday, and Glen Lake on Wednesday, May 16.
