Treece's wins called 'extraordinary'

Glen Lake’s standout runner Marissa Treece added two more impressive wins to her resume at the 14-team Ken Bell Invitational at Traverse City Central Friday.

She ran a 4:49.29 in the 1600 meter, and a 10:45.10 in the 3200 to win both races in meet record time.

“Marissa’s individual times have been better before, but to do both those times in the same day is extraordinary,” said Glen Lake coach Paul Christiansen. “Also, there was a pretty good head wind coming down the stretch.”

Treece broke the 1600 record by nearly six seconds, and smashed the 3200 record by 21 seconds.
Suttons Bay coach Cody Inglis called Treece’s wins the most outstanding performance he’s ever witnessed in track.

“To perform as well as she did, when no one was even close to her, was just a phenomenal thing to see,” he said. “Runners get pushed on by their competition, and she was so far out in front, I don’t know what spurred her on, but she did it. It was fantastic and exciting.”
The only other top-six finisher for Glen Lake was Anna Brown in the pole vault, who was sixth in 7' 6".

“The competition is some of the best we will see all year and in some events – better than the state finals,” said Christiansen. “Many of our kids had season personal bests and yet did not place.”
Glen Lake girls took 11th place of 16 teams, with first place going to East Kentwood.

“There were only four Division 4 schools at this meet. Mostly Division 1 and division 2 schools came, which made for great competition,” Christiansen said.

The Lakers took third place in Division 4, and East Kentwood was the boys’ meet winner.

“Hundreds of students from all over the state were there. It was some of the best competition in the state,” said Glen Lake girls’ coach Pete Edwards.

Glen Lake’s sole point-earner for the meet was junior Will Urquhart, who placed fourth in the discus at 121’ 10.”

“Many of the Laker athletes did great in their heats, but didn’t qualify to go into the finals,” said Edwards.

The Lakers also hosted a quad meet last Wednesday, May 2, and took third with 56 points. Kingsley won the meet with 119 points.

Highlights for the girls’ team were first-place finishes for the following: Abbie Christiansen in the long jump (14’2”); Brown in the pole vault (7’); Victoria Pecak in the 100-meter dash (13.73); and Treece in the 400 (1:02.7), 800 (2:26.97) and 1600 in 5:08.36.

Second-place finishes went to Dani Frost in the shot put (30' 1.5"); Amber Therrien in the 800 (2:37.98); and the 800 relay of Christiansen, Pecak, Therrien and Brown (1:59.68). Third-place finishers included Frost in the 100 hurdles (20.25); Gilmer in the 1600 (6:19.22); and the 400 relay team of Christiansen, Pecak, Therrien and Brown (57.19).

The Glen Lake boys’ team took second place in the quad meet. Weston Buchan won the long jump (19’7”) and the 100 meter dash (11.5), and anchored the winning 400 relay team (47.1). John Lee placed first in the 1600 (5:08) and 3200 (11:24), while Teddy Butrick won the 200 (24.73) and was the leadoff man in the winning 400 relay team.

The Lakers will remain home for the Garland Invitational today, May 10, though the meet is being hosted by Suttons Bay because the Norsemen track will soon be under construction.
