Invasive species plan backed

Empire Twp. board praises the measure
The Empire Township Board approved in concept an invasive species ordinance that would require all boats being launched into the Glen Lake Watershed to be washed before entering the water.

Solon officials to gather

A special meeting of the Solon Township Board, an annual gathering of sorts with groups and individuals involved with township operations, will be held tonight in Cedar.
The 7 p.m. meeting was scheduled when Township Board members met May 10 for their monthly meeting.

Asparagus festival this weekend in Empire

CLAIRE WIESEN, a Glen Lake fifth grader, enjoys roasted asparagus at school Tuesday. The school, in collaboration with the Michigan Land Use Institute, purchased 90 pounds of asparagus from Harry Norconk, who farms just south of the Leelanau/Benzie County line.

Rehab center unable to save eagle

They aren’t all happy endings at Wings of Wonders.
Earlier this spring, the bird rehab center in Empire was brought into the case of an adult bald eagle who was hit by a car south of Mesick. The big female was likely 6 years old or older, believes center director Rebecca Lessard.
