The Glen Lake softball team lost to only one Northwest Conference team this season, a doubleheader setback to Frankfort.
Wins over Glen Lake helped give the Panthers their fourth straight league title, and cost the Lakers a chance at the Northwest crown though they finished second with an 8-2 mark after beating Kingsley twice Tuesday. The Lakers won 12-8 and 11-2 on the Stags’ home field, and are 18-6 overall.
Glen Lake will host its second tournament on Saturday, May 19. The Lakers will play Pine River at 9 a.m., with Clare taking on Rogers City in the second game at 11:15 a.m. The consolation game will be played around 1:30 p.m., with the championship game staring around 3 p.m.
Coach Gary Galla said the Lakers started strong, getting 10 runs in the first inning. “We were up 10-0 at the top of the first, then hung on for the rest of the game,” he said.
Danielle Noonan was the winning pitcher. Tara Novak had 3 hits, 2 RBI; Shannon Galla had 3 hits; and Sabrina Galla, Noonan, Annie Lang and Erika Easter each had 2 hits.
In the second game, Noonan had 5 strikeouts in another winning effort from the mound. Easter and Kaleigh Blackburn each had 3 hits, 2 RBI; and Novak had 2 hits.
The Lakers hosted Benzie Central, Traverse City Central and defending Division IV state champions Allen Park Cabrini in the Laker Tournament on Saturday. Glen Lake beat Benzie in the first game of the day 12-7, then learned why Cabrini is undefeated in two years of play and in the middle of a 60-game winning streak. The Monarchs downed T-C Central 12-0 and beat Glen Lake in the finals, 10-0.
“They are a very disciplined, tough team. There is a reason they haven’t lost a game in two years,” Coach Galla said.
Against Benzie Noonan was the winning pitcher and helped her own cause at the plate with 3 hits, 2 RBI. Lauryn Pleva and Tara Novak each had 2 hits; and Shannon and Sabrina Galla each had 2 RBI.
In the championship, Novak had one hit.
