Glen Lake wins Schlosser tournament

Talk about peaks and valleys.

The Glen Lake baseball team hit a peak on Saturday when it won the first-ever John Scholsser Memorial Tournament. Schlosser is a former Glen Lake coach and Hall of Famer who died in a car accident this past winter.

"It was great to win the tournament because John meant so much to the Glen Lake baseball program," said Lakers coach Kris Herman.

The Lakers won a pair of close games to claim the title, knocking off Benzie Central, 11-9, and Traverse City St. Francis ,7-6. Benzie finished second in the round-robin tourney by edging the Gladiators, 5-4, in 11 innings.

Four Glen Lake players made the all-tournament team, including Josh Scarbrough (3 hits, 2 RBI, 2 saves), Gary Brown (4 hits, 4 RBI), Josh Jacklin (4 hits, 4 RBI) and Kyle Klumpp (5-hitter against Benzie).

Weston Buchan was also a standout, notching two hits against Benzie and getting the win against St. Francis.

While the tournament win was a peak, a doubleheader loss to Kingsley on Tuesday night was a valley. The 5-3 and 5-4 losses gave the Lakers a last place finish in the Northwest Conference with a 1-8-1 record. They are 10-16-1 overall.

In the first game, Buchan had two hits and three RBI. The second game featured two hits and two RBI by Jacklin and another two hits by Joey Galla.

Glen Lake returns to action Thursday, May 17 with a non-conference doubleheader at Elk Rapids.
