A runaway tire believed to be from a semi-trailer truck hit a curb and flew over two cars in a driveway before slamming into a Greilickville home just after 6 a.m. on Thursday last week.
"I was just getting out of the shower, and I heard an explosion in the kitchen," said Wayne Durga, who lives at the small wood frame home on M-22 next door to the Silver Swan restaurant. "I though it was the sewer line, but come to find out this big truck tire hit the house."
The impact from the tire, which Durga estimated to be 150 pounds, caved in a portion of the wood siding, damaged plumbing under the kitchen sink, and shifted cabinets in the house. Durga speculated the tire came off a passing truck on M-22, rolled through the Silver Swan parking lot until it hit a parking curb, then went untouched over the cars before slamming into the house just below the kitchen window.
After the tire struck the house, thick black tread marks were left on the wood siding.
Durga filed a police report following the May 10 mishap, but he said no truck driver stopped to report losing a tire. His grandfather, Don Schopieray who owns the house, said he has insurance.
Durga joked that he might take out a classified ad so the tire could be reunited with the truck it came from.
“I was thinking something like, ‘Lost tire looking for its home. Please call Ron Schopieray,’” Durga said.
