In one soccer game, Glen Lake dominated its opponent but still trailed at halftime.
In another game, the Lakers held a precarious lead despite largely being outplayed.
In the end, however, Glen Lake won both games and despite dropping a third contest in the past week, the Lakers have assured themselves of no worse than a .500 record for the season.
On Monday, Forest Area held a 1-0 halftime lead over the Lakers despite the fact Glen Lake had peppered the Warriors’ keeper with 12 shots on goal.
How did the coach react at halftime?
“He was pretty upset,” said Glen Lake mentor Dorne Yeager of his reaction. “I challenged them to play a lot harder, and to score three goals in the first five minutes of the second half.”
The Lakers responded to Yeager’s first appeal to play harder, and nearly met his second challenge when they scored three times in the first six minutes of the second half en route to a 7-1 win over Forest Area.
Freshman Jordan Lewis broke the ice for Glen Lake with a score in the opening moments of the second half. After subsequent scores from freshman Mandy Brown and sophomore Codi Yeager, the Lakers were rolling. Senior Ali Cruz then scored on a header, Lewis added her second tally, and juniors Skye Hillier and Leaha Cary gave Glen Lake insurance goals.
On Saturday, Glen Lake edged T-C Liberty, 1-0, even though the Lakers were outshot, 20-11. Lewis scored the game’s only goal, and keeper Gina Gauthier sparkled in net.
The two wins came after Glen Lake’s 4-1 loss to Manistee on Wednesday, May 9.
“The score was a little misleading in that we only trailed 2-1 late in the game, and I moved some players around to put more pressure on in the offensive end,” Yeager said, adding Manistee scored twice in the final moments to seal the win.
Besides losing the game, the Lakers also lost one of its top scorers to injury. Junior Emily Hubbell suffered an ankle injury and won’t return until District play starts on May 31.
The two wins and a loss left Glen Lake with a 8-3 record, and just four regular season games remaining before Districts begin. The Lakers played at Suttons Bay yesterday, May 16, and has road games at Traverse City Central’s junior varsity “Black” team on Friday, Manistee on Monday, and Benzie Central Tuesday.
If the Lakers win at least one of the road games, they will be assured of finishing over .500 for the first time in school history.
Yeager also learned that Glen Lake’s opponent in the District opener will be Big Rapids Crossroads Academy in a game at the Keystone fields in Traverse City.
