Eagles win behind pitching, hitting of Susan Herman
The St. Mary softball team is within striking distance of capturing another Cherryland Conference softball title taking two at Buckley on Monday.
The Eagles are 13-6 overall, 4-0 in the conference.
The week did not go as well for Leland. The Comets lost at home to the Bears on Thursday, and dropped two more at the Bellaire Tournament on Saturday.
Behind the pitching and hitting of Susan Herman, St. Mary walloped Buckley 9-1 and 14-5. Coach Ed Merica said Herman had 21 strikeouts in the two games, allowing just 1 walk and 8 hits. “Susan really helped us through some rough spots with her arm,” he said.
Swinging hot bats for the Eagles were Alison Korson, who hit a double; Mary Lingaur, 2 singles; and Sarah Schaub, Herman and Bradi Pasch each with singles in the first game. In the nightcap, St. Mary had 13 hits with Sarah Schaub and Herman each getting 3 singles and Herman belting a triple.
The Eagles won at Suttons Bay Friday in two high-scoring affairs, 20-10, 11-4. Herman dominated in a winning effort, notching 9 strikeouts. For Suttons Bay, Krista Young had a single and a triple at the plate, with Christa Nesky hitting a single and a double.
Suttons Bay gave up 18 hits, including two home runs. Herman hit a homer in the second inning and drove in three runs. Mary Lingaur hit her homer in the sixth and drove in two runs. Herman also had a single and Lingaur had 3 singles beside the home run. Emily Schaub collected 2 doubles and a single; and Sarah Schaub had a double and 2 singles.
In the second game, Bradi Pasch was the winning pitcher with a 7-strikeout performance. For Suttons Bay, pitcher Christa Nesky had three strikeouts. Young had a single and a double; Elaina Leaureaux and Taylor Metnzer each had 2 singles.
Pasch helped her own cause at the plate with a solo home run in the fifth inning. She also singled. Susan Herman had a triple and 2 singles; Lingaur had a double and a triple; and Anne Kuznicki and Robert DeLuca each had 2 singles.
On Saturday, Leland lost to Gaylord St. Mary 12-2, and Bellaire 19-0. On Thursday. the Comets lost at home to Buckley 15-2, 11-3. Kaleigh Stinson and Danielle Seitter had 2 hits each in first game. In the second, Dena Popp and Stinson also had 2 hits each.
Leland will host St. Mary today, compete at the Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Tournament on Saturday, and will host Buckley on Wednesday, May 23. Leland is scheduled to play at Bear Lake on Monday and at Charlevoix on Wednesday, May 23.
