A hat trick on the soccer field, and a third-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles in a big track meet in Traverse City Tuesday.
It was all in a day’s work for Suttons Bay’s Alyssa Korson, who just completed her second year participating in dual spring sports: soccer and track.
“I played part of the first half and sat down; then (again) until about the half-way mark of the second period and left,” said a humble Korson, who didn’t offer details about her performance until asked.
Korson, delayed by construction on M-22, made it to Traverse City Central High School just in time for the starting gun for the 300-meter hurdles.
“I was stuck in traffic and got there just as the race was starting,” she said.
Without missing a beat, the St. Mary junior ran the distance in 50.03 seconds, good enough for third place behind Kelsey Horvath of Benzie and Solon Township resident Hannah Meachum, running for Traverse City St. Francis.
Korson also played a key role in Suttons Bay’s 6-0 district soccer victory over Forest Area Tuesday. She led the team with three goals over the winless Warriors. Also helping the cause Tuesday were Kelly Fisher, Chelsea Moyer and Emily Seeley, with one goal apiece.
Things will likely be more challenging for the Norse today when they face an undefeated Kingsford Flivvers team at Elk Rapids at 5 p.m. The western Upper Peninsula powerhouse may have an answer for Korson in Emily Droese, who has 14 goals and six assists in the Flivvers’ 12-0-2 season.
“The last time we played, it was a good game,” Korson said of the 2006 District finals.
With the score tied at 1 at the half, the Norse scored late in the second half to advance, eventually going on to the state division IV championship.
If the Norse prevail, they will host the winner of the Cheboygan/Elk Rapids game at 5 p.m. Friday.
Suttons Bay dropped its fourth game of the 2007 campaign last week in its season finale against Charlevoix 3-1. Korson also netted the only Norse goal, assisted by Moyer.
