County fruit growers, already reeling from low prices for their product, still have to tend to trees that may not bear any fruit this summer. Early April’s balmy weather followed by frosts and high winds damaged most of the county’s crop, which one official called “close to a 100 percent loss.”

Pink flamingos are being found in a few chosen yards within the district, a fundraising idea being carried out by the parents of students in the Glen Lake Class of 2004. “Moving costs” collected will help class members attend events such as prom, and will also help pay for the graduation all-night party.

Another attempt at a county-wide septic inspection ordinance will be made this year by the new two-county Health Department Board.

To the surprise of few, the Leelanau Trails Association prevailed again Tuesday in Circuit Court, which ordered the county to issue building permits for the pending repairs to three wood trestles bridge on the ex-rail corridor.

A land-use application for a proposed communications tower along M-22 was approved by the Bingham Township Planning Commission last week, but a 3-month township moratorium on tower projects will block a land-use permit for the structure.

Fifty-nine seniors at Suttons Bay High School received diplomas in 1977 graduation exercises last night, and 127 seniors in six other high schools in Leelanau County are to be awarded sheepskins in upcoming ceremonies.

A class action lawsuit against the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners is reported to have been approved Monday by property tax protesters in Solon Township.
* * *
A few “April showers” fell on the last day of May in Leelanau County, but the amount of precipitation was small and the month ended with less than 10 percent of the month’s normal total.

The annual meeting of Leelanau County fire departments will be held at Leland Wednesday, according to Chief E.L. VanZee.

Miss Jean Schaub, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schaub of Empire, has been chosen by Unit 199, American Legion Auxiliary of Leelanau County, to attend Wolverine Girls’ State at the University of Michigan from June, 17 to 25.

Joseph Bonek and Joseph Odoi, of Centerville, were pleasant callers today. They say the frost has done but little damage.

Highway Commissioner Porter has organized two more road districts in this township, No. 9 North Manitou Island, No. 10 South Manitou.

Memorial Day will be observed at Maple City on Monday, May 31st under the auspices of Murray Post assisted by W. R. C. The parade will form at the Congregational church led by Maple City coronet band.
