Regular season ends well for Leland, S-M

St. Mary and Leland finished their regular baseball seasons on high notes — four wins for the Eagles, and four well-played games for the Comets.

Leland clinched second place in the Cherryland Friday with 8-3 and 13-7 wins at Buckley, finishing at 7-5 in conference play. The Comets dropped two to a talented Bellaire team Tuesday, 7-3 and 7-4, to finish at 14-12 overall.

Michael Nachazel notched the first win over the Bears, striking out 10 while yielding just two hits. Ryan Paulton’s two-run double in the second inning was followed by a single by Dylan Schaub for a lead Leland would never relinquish.

Paulton finished the game with a pair of doubles — and would add a third double in the lopsided nightcap.

Winning pitcher Matt Lichty led a hitting barrage in that second game, going 3-4 at the plate including a 3-run homer.

“Lichty helped his cause and had a great night,” said coach Hank Burch. “He ended up going 5-for-7 in two games.”

Collecting two hits each for Leland were Paulton, Adam Nedow, Alex Gulow and Michael Nachazel. Credit Nick Brown with swatting a triple.

Those Comet bats were largely quiet against Bellaire, with the notable exception of Paulton. His first inning sacrifice bunt in the opener ended up scoring two runs on a subsequent throwing error, and he wound up going 2-for-3. Matt Rinehart also went 2-for-3, and scored.

Paulton’s triple knocked in a run in the first inning of the nightcap, and his fifth inning double drove in two more.

“They were both really good games. Bellaire has a pretty good squad,” said Burch.

St. Mary picked off Buckley twice last Wednesday, May 23, 8-2 and 7-5. Pitcher Kienan Sutton allowed 3 hits and struck out 8 in the opener.

In what would become a theme for the Eagles’ offense, Jordon Peplinski tripled and singled, driving in two runs. Ray Platts singled twice.

In the nightcap, Peplinski singled twice and doubled, giving pitcher Joe Rexroat the runs he needed to claim the win.

St. Mary completed its regular season last Thursday, May 24, with 17-2, 13-8 wins at Kingsley.

Platts was the winning pitcher in the opener, cut to four innings by the mercy rule. He struck out 7 and allowed 2 hits.

Peplinski’s bat stayed hot with home runs to left and left center. “On both of them, there was no doubt,” said Eagles coach Steve Plamondon.

Peplinski also singled, collecting 7 RBI.

Matt Pasch homered and singled, driving in 3 runs, while Colin Korson doubled and singled twice.

Colin Korson was the winning pitcher in the second game. Pasch had 3 singles, Korson singled twice, and Peplinski’s single and double raised his output to 10 hits in four games.

St. Mary finished its regular season at 23-6, and won the Cherryland with an 11-1 record.
