National Park Service rangers at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will continue their weekly "Saturdays at the Lakeshore" hikes and have invited some special guests to lead some of the programs.
Every Saturday at 1 p.m., visitors can meet a park ranger at the Visitor Center in Empire on M-72 for an introduction to that day’s topic. Then everyone drives a short distance to where the program begins. Following is the coming month’s schedule:
• June 2: “Hike with the Butterfly Master” will feature a visit with Michigan State University Extension entomologist Dr. Duke Elsner
• June 9: “The World of Frogs” will help participants identify several local varieties by sight and sound.
• June 16: “Piping Plovers: The Little Birds That Could” will introduce visitors to the largest population of the endangered species in the Great Lakes.
• June 23: “Flowers in the Sand” will demonstrate that dunes are not always just barren places with scruffy grass.
• June 30: “The Weather Machine Shifts Gears” will feature a visit with local TV weatherman and naturalist Dave Barrons.
“Saturdays at the Lakeshore” are free and last until 3 p.m. No reservations are needed and participants need only purchase a park entrance pass. For more information, visit the park’s website at www.nps.gov/slbe, or phone 326-5134.
