Lauren Toro is valedictorian and Anna Lau the salutatorian of Leland High School's Class of 2007.
Toro, daughter of Brooke Wunderlich of Lake Leelanau and Carlos Toro of Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, will graduate with a grade point average of 3.96. During her senior year, she was president of the National Honor Society, business manager for the Student Council, a Natural Helper and a “big pal” in the Big Pals/Little Pals mentoring program.
Her extracurricular activities included sports and the arts. She has participated in volleyball since seventh grade, was a member of the Leelanau Children’s Choir from third through 10th grade, served as team manager for the Suttons Bay cooperative soccer team, and was published in Exposures in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Toro has also been awarded numerous academic honors. She earned a Grand Valley State University award for excellence, a Michigan Competitive Scholarship, the U.S. Marine Corps Scholastic excellence award, and the Leland Top Scholar award in recognition for taking a rigorous college prep curriculum.
Other accolades include recognition in Advanced Placement English literature, social studies, math and science. At the Leland honors convocation, she received the National Honor Society scholarship, the SKY scholarship, the J. Philip Vance Outstanding Senior award and the Boynton Memorial scholarship.
She will attend Grand Valley State University, where she plans to pursue a degree in psychology.
Lau, daughter of John and Kathy Lau of Cedar, will graduate with a 3.9 GPA. She plans to attend Kalamazoo College in the fall, focusing on pre-medicine and playing volleyball for the Hornets.
Her co-curricular activities have included being an active member of the National Honor Society (where she served as co-chair for the Big Pals/Little Pals program), a Natural Helper, and holding a number of offices for the Class of 2007.
Athletically, she has played basketball and volleyball at Leland since seventh grade and has earned numerous awards, including a first-team All State recognition in volleyball.
School officials said Lau has taken the most rigorous courses offered at Leland, including Advanced Placement and honors classes. At the annual honors convocation, she was awarded the social studies department award, the Noah Suttmann award for computer science and technology, a Kalamazoo College academic honors scholarship, and a Suttons Bay Art Festival committee art scholarship.
In addition, she received a Michigan Merit Scholarship, a Michigan Competitive scholarship award, a presidential award for academic excellence, the U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar/athletic award, and a Leland Top Scholar award.
Lau was also awarded the Prospectors Club of Leelanau County scholarship, the Henry Holt scholarship, the J. Philip Vance Outstanding senior award, and the Boynton Memorial scholarship.
