County residents should get ready for another season of dust and traffic delays now that the county Road Commission has released its list of county roads to receive "seal coating."
At the commission’s Tuesday meeting, manager Herb Cradduck presented a list of county road that will receive the preventative maintenance measure. Seal coating involves applying a layer of sticky fluid called emulsion to a road surface, then adding a layer of road gravel. The oil-based emulsion dries, combines with the gravel to form a uniform hard surface. Cradduck said it is a cost-saving way to keep roads in good condition while avoiding a major resurfacing project.
Commission workers have to wait until temperatures are consistently warm to apply the emulsion, so work will likely start toward the end of June. The commission’s plan would almost double the amount of emulsion used last year, from 120,00 gallons to the 223,758 proposed for this year. Cradduck said it is unlikely all the roads on the list will get the seal coating treatment this summer.
“We will get to as many of these roads as possible, but we have a limited window of time and weather in which to do this work,” he said.
Following is a list of roads on which seal coating will occur:
• County Road 641, from Bingham Road to M-204;
• County Road 643 from Rosinski to Rice;
• County Road 651 from Centerville Township’s southern boundary to Bodus Road;
• Bugai Road from M-72 to Hoxie;
• Newman Road from M-72 to Baatz Road;
• County Road 616 from Maple City to Cedar;
• County Road 651 from County Road 645 to Solon Township’s north boundary line.
The following roads may have seal coating done on their entire length: Send Road, Lee Point Road, Whispering Hills Drive, Ryant Road, east end of Hlavka Road, Angus Road, Carter Road, High Point Drive, Spring Valley Drive, Bayview Drive, Bayview Court, Leelanau Court, Harrys Road, Onomonee Road, Golfview Drive, Valley Lane Road, Trillium Drive, Pernter Road, Alpers Road, McLeod Drive, Solon Road, Allgaier Road, and Lautner Road.
Cradduck said workers will start at the top of the list and move down, getting to as many roads as they can. Questions or concerns should be directed to the Road Commission by calling 271-3993.
In a related matter, engineer James C. Johnson said Reith-Riley Construction will start paving County Roads 616 and 669 through a federal aid project on Monday. Paving will take about two to 21/2 weeks. There will be lane closures with traffic controlled by flagging. “We’ll have anywhere from a half mile to a full mile of road closed on one side while the asphalt is being applied,” he said.
The work will occur on 616 from County Road 675 to 669 where it heads north, and on 669 from 616 to Ryant Road. Reith-Riley will also pave 669 from M-22 south to Hlavka Road as part of the $1.2 million project.
