The weather is warming up, school’s nearly out, and there’s a festive mood in the air.
Sometimes, however, festivities can lead to tragedy, Leelanau County’s top law enforcement officials warn.
The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office annually issues a letter to parents of graduating seniors, noting the importance of using “sound judgment and common sense.”
“Too often this time of year results in tragedy for a family fallen victim to an alcohol-related traffic death of serious injury,” said Sheriff Mike Oltersdorf.
Prosecutor Joe Hubbell, who signed the letter with Oltersdorf and Lt. Bill Elliott of the Michigan State Police, echoed the warning.
“Traffic accidents are the greatest killer of young people today,” said Hubbell. He also sent his own warning to youths and their parents.
“Under Michigan law, it’s illegal for a minor to consume, purchase, or have the presence of alcohol in their system,” Hubbell said. “They don’t have to have the can in their hand.”
Oltersdorf appealed “for everyone to be compliant” so that roads remain as safe as possible.
“Parents are ultimately responsible for their children,” said Oltersdorf. He urged parents to closely monitor their children’s activities, especially when it comes to underage drinking. It’s not unusual, he said, for young adults to bring alcohol and other substances to parties in clear plastic bottles.
He added that parents can be ticketed for a misdemeanor for providing or furnishing alcohol to minors if it’s consumed on their property — even without their knowledge.
County deputies will be extra vigilant during the graduation season, and won’t go easy on offenders.
“There’s a zero-tolerance policy, we give no warnings. Minors can be cited or arrested and taken to the jail,” said the sheriff.
Last weekend, when three local schools held graduation ceremonies, no incidents were reported. He credited parents for their vigilance.
“Three schools had lock-in graduation parties which minimizes risk and problems that could be associated with alcohol,” Oltersdorf said.
