The number of building permits issued so far this year, and the estimated construction value associated with those permits, continues to lag significantly behind last year's totals.

Over the latest two-week period, only 28 new permits were filed for public review at the Leelanau County Building Inspections Department. During the same two-week period in 2006 – as the construction season was swinging into gear – 52 new permits were filed.

The 28 new permits brought the year-to-date total to 165 permits – about 24 percent fewer than the total filed by this time last year.

Estimated construction values associated with the 28 new permits totaled $1,312,113, bringing the year-to-date total to $10,336,740. That figure is about 16 percent behind the total posted by this time in 2006.
