The Glen Arbor Women's Club (GAWC) has awarded four scholarship totaling $5,000 to students graduating from Glen Lake High School based on academics and overall achievement.

Gwen Baxter, representing the GAWC at the high school awards night ceremony Thursday, presented the $2,000 GAWC Memorial Scholarship to Jennifer Bush, and $1,000 scholarships went to Sean Niemisto and Eric Otto. Additionally, Michael Brown was awarded an extraordinary achievement award scholarship in the amount of $1,000.

The GAWC has been in existence for 57 years and been involved in various philanthropic activities in the community. One of their past fundraisers was a popular fall smorgasbord that funded numerous scholarships and community projects.

This year, the club will host two new events it has organized to support future scholarships to local students and community projects — the “Running Bear 5K run/walk” and a “kids’ run.”

The new events will take place on Tuesday, July 31 in Glen Arbor. Registration will take place at 8:15 a.m. with the race beginning at 9 a.m. for adults. The children’s run will start at 9:15 a.m. Prizes will include a weekend and dinner at The Homestead resort, and a weekend donated by Leelanau Vacation Rentals. Special prizes will also go to the children.

Following the race, a celebration for the participants will include bagels, muffins, fruit, drinks and presentation of prizes and awards.
