Amateur Bill Rankin of Cedar was one of only 27 golfers to shoot par or better after the first two rounds of the Michigan Open at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa.
Rankin shot an even-par 143 (73-70) at The Bear and Wolverine courses, and was just eight shots off the lead held by Jason Swihart, who shot an 68-67 Monday and Tuesday for an 8-under total of 135. More than 200 players entered the tournament, with the top 85 making Tuesday’s cut.
Defending champion Scott Hebert and Crystal Mountain head pro Brad Dean were among the players in contention heading into third round play at The Bear. Hebert was at 3-under, while Dean is three shots back at 5-under.
Nate Kelly, an amateur and former Suttons Bay High School standout, missed the cut after carding an 86-74.
The tournament was scheduled to conclude today, June 14.
