Kasson approves return of Maple City Car Show

The Maple City Car Show will return to the community this summer after a one-year hiatus.

The Kasson Township Board agreed Monday night to approve the show, scheduled for Aug. 26 in Maple City.

“We agreed to support the show, make sure there’s insurance coverage and help the organizers with closing the street,” township Clerk Kathyln Feys said.

Show organizers typically close down a portion of Bellinger Road to display vintage and hot rod automobiles, which are judged and awarded prizes. There is also food and arts and crafts vendors. Proceeds from entry fees for automobiles go toward community improvement projects.

In other business during the 11⁄4-hour meeting, the board approved a resolution that outlines the deadline for paying property taxes and how late fees are assessed.

Tax payments postmarked by Sept. 14 and received no later than Sept. 18 will be accepted without interest. Those received between Feb. 14 and 28 will be assessed a 3 percent fee. Others paid after March 1 are considered “delinquent” and payable to Leelanau County, Feys said.

Board members took no action to fill a long-vacant seat on the Planning Commission, created by the resignation of Grayson East last fall.

“We still don’t have any applicants with one seat remaining unfilled,” Feys said.

The board also did not take action on proposed legislation that would turn over to counties the township’s ability to administer elections, collect property taxes and assess property.

“We didn’t take any action as a board. But we decided to write our legislators individually,” Feys said.
