A week after 165 seniors graduated from Leelanau County high schools, 49 more students received their diplomas Friday night at Leland and Northport.
(Webmaster's note: see out photos section for pictures of the graduation ceremonies.)
Friends, family and relatives of Leland’s 30-member senior class lined the aisle in the school gymnasium as soon-to-be graduates filed in alphabetical order accompanied by music from the school band, directed by Jennifer Fenton.
Salutatorian Ann Lau, valedictorian Lauren Toro and teacher Jason Stowe all gave remarks. The Class of 2007 was the first Stowe taught during his career at Leland.
The ceremony also included a musical video tribute prepared by Lau, who was also the winner of the Noah Suttmann technology award at the senior honors convocation last month.
The community of Northport wished its 19 graduates well as they sent them out into the adult world following Friday’s commencement ceremony.
Parents and children embraced during the traditionally emotional presentation of parent flowers. Stephen Gilbreath of Northport was the keynote speaker, salutatorian Jessie Earl and valedictorian Jacob Egeler each spoke, and Lauren Browning performed the song For Good from the musical Wicked as part of the ceremony. The evening was capped with a video presentation detailing the scholastic career of the Class of 2007 from kindergarten through its senior year. Graduates Michelle Paquette, Kathryn Drummond, Abigail Van Dusen and Krista Young created the presentation.
