Golf carts could soon be an acceptable mode of transportation on village streets, based on a proposed ordinance discussed last week by the Northport Village Council.
Council members are examining a proposal that would allow licensed drivers to operate a golf cart on village streets during daylight hours. Lighted vehicles would be allowed after dark.
Initial response to the proposal was positive. Most in the audience said they felt it makes sense for Northport, citing low emissions, low fuel cost, and slower lightweight vehicles that would produce less wear and tear on streets and convenience to many local retired people.
Village resident Patty DeYoung presented the council Thursday night with the signatures of 50 people who were in favor of allowing golf carts in the village. Jerry Spears, who also attended the meeting, supported limiting permission to those at least 21 years of age.
In other business during the 1/14-hour meeting, the council accepted the only bid for fuel, quoted at 5 cents per gallon over the “rack price.” The lone bidder was Busby Oil of Northport.
