New G-L middle school classes eyed

A proposal to expand exploratory offerings to middle school students at Glen Lake was discussed this week by the Board of Education.

“In an ideal world, students would be able to enroll in the courses of their own choosing,” said Secondary Principal Kevin Kelly, who presented the school board with a plan to add new exploratory courses at the middle school level this fall. “However, limited time and human resources make that impossible. Instead, elective classes are convened that best serve the largest number of students.”

Currently, middle school students at Glen Lake (7th and 8th graders) are offered exploratory courses in 9-week increments. They include drama and guitar, cooperative games and initiatives, art, leadership skills referred to as “grounds crew,” and band.

Kelly and his staff proposed to expand the offerings to include Spanish, health, drafting, recreational reading and writing, and journalism. Each course, with the exception of band and journalism, would be offered in 9-week sessions.

No decision on the proposal was made with the exception of journalism, which was approved.

A proposal for the class was presented to the board during its May meeting.

In other business during the monthly meeting, board members:

• Learned that 65 kindergarten students are enrolled for fall classes;

• Agreed that sixth graders will remain within the elementary wing after their relocation from middle to elementary school last fall;

• Learned that teachers are comparing the elementary gym curriculum to those included in state benchmarks for grade level expectations.
