Hermoine Hendryx "Mittie" Swartz

Hermione Hendryx “Mittie” Swartz died at Munson Hospice House on June 1, 2007 surrounded by her children.

Mittie was born January 17, 1918 in Fernbank, Ohio. At the age of three her family moved to Lee Point, Suttons Bay, Michigan. Her father, James B. Hendryx, was a popular author, adventurer, and sportsman of that era, and her mother, Hermione Flagler Hendryx, was an accomplished pianist. She grew up in a free-spirited environment with her brother Jim and sister Betty. This setting was an inspiration for her artistic lifestyle and talent.

She attended the Suttons Bay stone school house, Traverse City High School, and later University of Michigan.

In 1942 she married Dr. Fred G. Swartz Jr. of Traverse City. After his internship at the Traverse City State Hospital, they moved to Grosse Pointe, Michigan, raising three children.

In 1982 they returned to Mittie’s family home on Lee Point.

Throughout her life she pursued her creative talents. The Grosse Pointe Artists Association and Society of Arts and Crafts were an important part of her life. She leaves behind a large collection of paintings, some only recently completed.

Mittie is survived by her three children, Fred (Judy), Mary, and Edith, all living in the local area, and her younger sister Betty Loomis of Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, and her brother James B. Hendryx, Jr.

Visitation was Saturday, June 9 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.

Condolences may be shared with the family on their online guest book at

Contributions may be made to the Cherryland Humane Society or Munson Hospice House.
