Volunteers to help with Port Oneida field-clearing project

Volunteers can help restore the historic landscapes in Port Oneida as part of a field-clearing project sponsored by Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear (PHSB) this Friday and Saturday (June 22-23) between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Non-native and invasive vegetation taking over meadows and fields will be removed during the project in collaboration with the National Park Service and Cherry Republic of Glen Arbor. PHSB was awarded a $4,000 grant from Cherry Republic to fund the project and another field clearing event scheduled in September.

“This is a great example of support from local businesses which have an impact on maintaining the integrity of these farmsteads,” said Susan Pocklington, acting director of PHSB.

Volunteers will pile logs from larger trees already felled, hand cut saplings with lopers, and spray to prevent regrowth. The project will begin at the Charles and Hattie Olsen Farm on M-22 just west of Port Oneida Road, and then move to the Carsten Burfiend Farm.

In September, the project will continue to other areas of Port Oneida. No special skills are required and those interested may participate to whatever extent possible.
Participants may register by calling 334-6103.
