Graduate receives cum laude honors

Jessica Scott, a 2003 graduate of Glen Lake High School, graduated cum laude from Kalamazoo College at the June 10 commencement ceremony.

Scott, daughter of Bob and Marie Scott of Empire, earned a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish language and literature and in international area studies (Latin America). She received the Virginia Hinkelman Memorial Award, given to a student who displays a deep concern for the well being of children as demonstrated through career goals in the field of child welfare. She is also the recipient of a senior leadership award and was also a LaPlante Scholar, an award bestowed on students outstanding dedication to civic engagement.

During her career at Kalamazoo, Scott was very active in extracurricular activities and in off-campus learning experiences. She studied abroad for six months in Valparaiso, Chile. She also participated in a career internship at Comsemex and Enlaces, an immigration organization in Chicago. She coordinated a service-learning program for Hispanic children (kindergarten through 6th grade) at the Lincoln International Studies School in Kalamazoo, and she was a member of the Frelon Dance Troupe, a student dance organization on campus.

Scott is currently at work in a post-graduate internship at Farm Worker Legal Services in Bangor, Mich. She is considering several options, including teaching Spanish or entering graduate school or law school.
